Academic Status and Policies

Students attending DeKalb Technical College are expected to meet certain academic standards. These standards stress the importance of successful performance to maintain an academic status of good standing at DeKalb Technical College. Students are considered to be in good standing if they are not on academic probation or academic dismissal. President's List
At the end of each quarter, students who have achieved a grade point average of 4.0 on fifteen (15) credit hours or more of courses, numbered 100 or higher, are placed on the President’s list.

Dean's List
At the end of each quarter, students who have achieved a grade point average of 3.7 or better on ten credit hours or more of courses, numbered 100 or higher, are placed on the Dean's List.

Academic Warning
Students who have failed to achieve a quarterly grade point average of 2.0 or better are placed on Academic Warning and alerted that further deterioration in academic performance may lead to probation. Students should see an advisor to plan for improvement or referral prior to beginning their next quarter's classes.

Academic Probation
Students on Academic Warning are placed on Academic Probation if their cumulative grade point average is less than 1.75. Students on Academic Probation should (1) see an advisor to plan for improvement and (2) take a reduced academic load. Students remain on probation until they earn a cumulative grade point average of 1.75 or better.

Academic Suspension
Students on Academic Probation are suspended from the College if the cumulative grade point average is less than 1.75 and the quarterly grade point average is less than 2.0.

READMISSION FROM ACADEMIC SUSPENSION

For the first and second suspension, students will be eligible to reapply for admission after one quarter. After the third and any subsequent suspension, students will be eligible to reapply for admission after one calendar year. An appeal of Academic Suspension may be made and must be initiated no later than the first day preceding the new quarter. An appeal form may be obtained from the Dean of Students on the Clarkston Campus and the Assistant Dean of Student Services on the Covington-Newton Campus.

HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES ACADEMIC POLICIES

Transfer Credits for Health and Human Services Programs:  Ordinarily, institutions must be accredited by the regional crediting association for transfer credit to be accepted. Credit is generally given on a course equivalent basis. If equivalency is questioned, a validation examination may be required. Only courses with a minimum grade of “C” are transferable. Course credit will not exceed equivalent course credit at DeKalb Technical College. Contact the Registrar’s Office for additional information.

A grade of “C” or better is required to pass all courses in Health and Human Services and all students must maintain an overall GPA of 2.0 to remain eligible for continued enrollment in their chosen program of study. All required prerequisite courses must be completed prior to entry into Health and Human Services programs. A student who fails and/or withdraws from any course must repeat the course and related co-requisites. A student who is readmitted to a program after an absence of four consecutive quarters or greater must reapply according to the guidelines outlined in each Health and Human Services program policies. Students who fail or withdraw twice from a Health and Human Services program are not eligible for readmission into that same program. Students may apply to another Health and Human Services program, another program within the College and/or continue to take general college courses.
