Changes and Access
to Student Records
Right to Accurate and Confidential Educational Records
DeKalb Technical College recognizes its responsibility for maintaining accurate student
information and academic records. Students have the assurance that their
educational records, compiled and maintained by DeKalb Technical College officials,
are recorded and retained in confidence in accordance with the regulations
contained in the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974. Briefly,
this act calls for:
1. Full access to student records for students 18 years of
age and over.
2. Hearings to contest contents of personal records that are
suspected to be inaccurate;
3. Requirements of notice and written consent by students before
the records can be transmitted to most third parties.
DeKalb Technical College will furnish annual notification to students concerning
their right to inspect and review their educational records, their right
to request amendment of educational records that are incorrect or misleading
or that violate privacy or other rights, and their right to a hearing
to amend such records if necessary. This annual notice is published
in the Student Handbook
and the current catalog in greater detail listing the official responsible for specific records
as well as the hearing and appeal procedure.
Changes in a Student's Program of Study
Applicants or currently enrolled students may change their initial program of study choice. Those who wish to change their program of study must meet with an Admissions Student Affairs Specialist in order to note of any additional admission requirements for their new choice, and to complete an official program of study change form. Applicants who wish to change their initial program of study choice are encouraged to do so as soon as possible prior to new student registration, but no later than the end of the drop/add period for the quarter in which they register. Changes made after the drop/add period become effective the following quarter. Currently enrolled students who desire to change their program of study must do so prior to the end of the drop/add period in order for their program change to be effective for the current quarter in which they are registered. Changes made after the drop/add period become effective for the following quarter.
Changes in Schedule of Classes, Drop/Add Period
If it becomes necessary for students to change their schedule after
being registered, they may do so through the end of the designated drop/add
period as published in the quarterly Schedule of Classes.
