Hardware/Software Requirements

Minimum requirements for computer*:

  • Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP
  • Pentium Processor, 500 Mhz
  • 64 MB RAM
  • CD-ROM
  • Sound card and speakers
  • Java™-compliant browser**

* All computer labs on campus meet these requirements

** For the Java™ compliant browser, the minimum requirement is Microsoft® Internet Explorer 6.0 or Netscape Navigator 6.0

 

Recommended:

  • 1 GHz Pentium III processor
    Pentium processor
  • 128MB RAM, 56K modem

OR:

  • MacOs 7.5.5, Power PC Processor
  • 32MB of RAM, 28.8 KBPS Modem
  • CD-ROM
 
Additional Software Requirements:
Some online courses require specific software packages. Most Computer courses require the student to purchase Microsoft Office XP Professional. This requires either Windows XP or 2000 and is available through DeKalb Bookstore at a reduced price for DeKalb Tech students.


Internet Service Provider (ISP)
An Internet Service Provider is a company that can provide you with access to the Internet. There are many different ISP’s available (Earthlink, AOL, etc.). You can contact any of them to set up your personal account. You must have an ISP provider if you are going to do the coursework from your home.

Warning! AOL users should be aware of certain compatibility problems between the Blackboard Courseware and the AOL Internet Browser.

Email Account
You will need an email account to communicate with the instructor and other students in your class. DeKalb Tech provides you with email account which students are strongly encouraged to use - click here for more information. Your ISP will also provide you with free email. Any of the search engines also offer email accounts free of charge. When you sign up with your ISP, ask about your email account.
