WHAT
IS THE ASSET TEST AND HOW IS IT USED?
The ASSET test is the official placement test used by all public technical
colleges and institutes in the state of Georgia. It is sanctioned
by the Georgia Department of Technical & Adult Education. The
ASSET test can help you identify your present strengths and needs
so that you can build a solid educational plan for success while you
are attending DeKalb Technical College. From your ASSET scores, you
will learn about your skills in the areas of writing, reading, and
mathematics, and how they compare with the skills needed for success
in various courses. DeKalb Tech's staff will then identify courses
and services we offer that will assist you in reaching your career
goals.
HOW
ARE YOU SCHEDULED TO TAKE THE ASSET?
If you are a first-year student who has submitted an application
with an application fee, you will be mailed an ASSET placement test
invitation letter informing you of the date, time, and place for your
test.
If you are a transfer student, you are not scheduled for ASSET
placement testing. You may have transferable postsecondary English
and math courses that exempt you from the test. Transfer students
who submit an application must also submit all OFFICIAL secondary
and postsecondary transcripts directly to the Admissions Office. Since
a testing invitation will not be mailed to transfer students, they
must come to the Admissions Office to request and/or schedule an ASSET
placement test date.
If you are a student with a disability needing special assistance,
you must contact the Special Services Adviser at 404-297-9522, ext.
1230 or ext. 1602, or (Deaf/Hard of Hearing) TDD (404) 297-7769 prior
to the testing session.
WHAT
TYPES OF QUESTIONS ARE ON THE ASSET TEST?
The ASSET placement test consists of three tests: Writing skills,
reading skills, and numerical skills. The Writing skills test is a
36-item, 25-minute test that measures your understanding of appropriate
usage in grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, writing strategy,
and writing style. The Reading skills test is a 24-item, 25-minute
test that assesses reading comprehension as a product of your skills
in referring and reasoning. The test items require you to derive meaning
from three prose passages of about 375 words each followed by a set
of eight multiple-choice test questions. The Numerical skills test
is a 32-item, 25-minute test that assesses your knowledge and skills
in the performance of basic math operations using whole numbers, decimals,
and fractions.
A fourth test, Elementary Algebra, is required of degree students
and those selecting the following programs of study: Drafting, Plastics
Technology, Electronics Technology, and Industrial Maintenance Technology.
