Procedure for College Closing Due to Inclement Weather
It is the policy of
PROCEDURE FOR A DECISION TO CLOSE, NOT TO CLOSE, OR
TO DELAY THE OPENING OF THE COLLEGE
1.
At approximately
5:30 a.m. to 6:00 a.m., the President makes a decision based upon weather
reports and other available information regarding closing the College or
delaying its opening. In the event that
the President is not available, the Vice Presidents of Administrative Services
and Academic Affairs will jointly make the decision.
2.
The President
will contact the Vice Presidents regarding the decision to close, or to delay
the opening of the College. Each Vice
President is responsible for notifying key managers under his/her supervision.
3.
The Director of
Marketing and Public Relations will contact designated radio and television
stations with the following message: “All campuses of

The Vice
President of Administrative Services places the appropriate announcement on the
telephone system and Internet. The Director of Information Technology is the
backup for the Vice President of Administrative Services.

These steps are
repeated before 3:00 p.m. to announce the closing of the College for evening
classes if applicable.
WSB Radio and WSB-TV serve as the primary media
contacts. Other major media outlets will be contacted time permitting.
Employees are required to
rely on the information posted to the telephone system or Internet regarding
work schedules on inclement weather days. In the event that the College phone system or connectivity
to the Internet is not working, employees should contact their immediate
supervisor for information.
PROCEDURE FOR PAYROLL REPORTING INCLEMENT WEATHER
PERIODS:
College Closed for the Day - Any or All Campuses:
Full-Time Employees: Full-time employees receive pay for the day charged
as unscheduled holiday. If a non-exempt employee is required by the
Supervisor to report to work, the employee is compensated with “equivalent”
time off in addition to the unscheduled holiday pay. If an employee reports to
work during a closed time and is not required to work, the employee
reports a regular workday and does not receive unscheduled holiday pay or
equivalent time off.
Part-Time/Hourly Employees: Part-time employees are paid for hours actually
worked. Scheduled hours not worked due to inclement weather conditions
may be rescheduled with the approval of the supervisor.
College Opens at an Announced Time - Any or All
Campuses: The following examples are
based on a partial Inclement Weather Day when DeKalb Tech announces an opening
time of 12:00 noon.
Full-Time Employees
1.
Arrival After
Official Opening Hours - If an employee arrives at work later than the
announced time for opening (for example, 12:00 noon) the hours regularly
scheduled for the employee up to 12:00

If an employee
does not report to work at the announced time for opening (for example 12:00
noon) the hours regularly scheduled for that employee up to 12:00
3.
If an employee
is already scheduled for a vacation day or is sick on an inclement weather day,
the employee cannot charge the hours absent as unscheduled holiday.
4. If a full-time non-exempt employee is required by
their supervisor to report to work during an inclement weather closure, the
hours worked are reported as unscheduled holiday and the employee is entitled
to “equivalent” time off.
Part-Time Hourly
Employees: Part-time employees are
