II. D. 5.     DeKalb Technical College

                Dress Code

DeKalb Technical College prescribes standards of professional conduct relative to the instructional program, services, and operations.

PROFESSIONAL ATTIRE

Employees of the College are expected to exercise professional discretion relative to proper attire. Good taste in the choice of wearing apparel and grooming contributes to an environment conducive to learning. It is recognized that pride in the way one looks fosters pride in the way one performs on the job and inspires one to the best performance in all phases of work.

Business attire appropriate to the position assigned and the job responsibilities is required at all times unless otherwise noted.

For days specified as “Casual Days,” attire described as “business-casual” is permitted. Employees must exercise good judgment in the selection of clothing to wear on days designated as "casual days."  Please be reminded that casual day does not mean ‘dressing down.’ At all times, all employees are expected to maintain a professional atmosphere and proper image with various customers and students. The following guidelines are to be used in determining appropriateness of "business casual" dress:

WHILE NOT ALL INCLUSIVE, THE FOLLOWING TYPES OF DRESS ARE UNACCEPTABLE FOR "BUSINESS CASUAL" DAYS:

The President or Vice Presidents may authorize some exceptions for employees in specific jobs where the physical demands of the job require more casual clothing.  However, whatever is authorized to be worn must be neat, clean, pressed and may not be torn, faded or excessively worn.

The use of extremely noticeable fragrances is prohibited.  If perfumes, colognes, hair sprays, perfumed lotions, etc. are too noticeable or cause sneezing, coughing or discomfort to fellow employees or visitors, their use must be discontinued.  Employees affected by strong fragrances should report this to their supervisor who will discuss this in a discrete manner with the employee who is wearing the fragrance.

Compliance of the dress code and extremely noticeable fragrance issues are the responsibility of the supervisor.  When necessary, guidance on handling those who abuse this policy should be sought from Department Chairs, Deans, Vice Presidents or the Director of Human Resources.
