           Code of Ethics of the Education Profession

DeKalb Technical College expects standards of professional behavior that exceed those minimally prescribed by law.

COMMITMENT TO STUDENTS

1.   Personnel must allow students to examine ideas in an atmosphere of freedom and confidence and to participate as responsible citizens in community affairs.

2.   Personnel must ensure an environment that is fair, humane, and respectful; free of discrimination and illegal or inappropriate conduct.

COMMITMENT TO THE PROFESSION AND THE PUBLIC

1.   Personnel must fulfill their responsibilities to society and to their profession by manifesting competence, professional discretion, and good citizenship.  Faculty will be free from institutional censorship or discipline when they speak or write as citizens.  As professional educators, faculty members must be accurate, exercise appropriate restraint, show respect for the opinions of others and make every effort to indicate they are not speaking for the institution.

2.   Personnel must maintain the highest levels of integrity and objectivity in the performance of duties and make every reasonable effort to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest.  Personnel shall not directly, or indirectly, solicit, receive, accept or agree to receive a thing of value by inducing the reasonable belief that the giving of the thing will influence his/her performance or failure to perform any official action.

SOLICITATION OF/BY STAFF MEMBERS

Employees of DeKalb Technical College are discouraged from selling any goods or services at any time on school property.

Employees of DeKalb Technical College shall not advertise instructional materials, supplies, or other items that may be available for purchase in stores and other commercial establishments.  Commercial advertising/solicitation shall not be permitted on or in DeKalb Technical College properties at any time.

No employee shall give oral or written endorsement to any company or representative for any periodical, book, or product that may be offered for sale to schools, students, or the public.

Employees must comply with the State Board Policies of the Technical College System of Georgia and the Governor’s Executive Order of Code of Ethics for Executive Branch Officers and Employees, regarding giving and receiving gifts.
