Instructional Staff Work Assignments
![]()
Faculty work assignments conform to the
policy of the State Board of Technical and Adult Education, which specifies
that the obligation to the college for a full-time member of the academic staff
is 40 hours per work week (SBTAE Policy
Manual III.R. and III.Q.). The optimal number of direct student contact academically-related
hours for a normal teaching assignment is 25 hours per week accompanied by a
minimum of 15 hours of indirect academically-related activities, or similar
combination, to comprise the total workweek. The minimum working hours requirement includes authorized time-off for approved
leave as well as designated State holidays. Meal periods are unpaid and
shall not be considered “hours worked” for the purpose of meeting this
obligation.
Faculty may be required to work additional
hours, as necessary, to meet college objectives or needs of students, without
further compensation.
A calendar is developed annually for full-time
faculty (July 1 - June 30). The calendar
specifies student days, critical days for faculty, staff development days,
holidays, and days available for annual leave. Department chairs develop quarterly faculty
schedules in cooperation with the Academic Dean.
Academic Faculty Schedule Forms are to be completed
at the beginning of each quarter and submitted to the appropriate Department
Chair and Academic Dean.
Deviations
from an approved schedule must be requested in writing and approved by the
appropriate Department Chair and Academic Dean.
In the event that either a full-time or adjunct
faculty member is absent from class, the appropriate Department Chair consults with
the Academic Dean and arranges for a substitute teacher to replace the absent
faculty member. The college is committed to maintaining the required standards
of instruction as defined by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools,
Commission on Colleges, and by the Technical College System of Georgia.
Other faculty of the department or an administrator
qualified to teach in the subject area may substitute for an absent faculty
member. In extreme cases, e.g. a lengthy
illness, a substitute faculty member may be employed.
Adjunct
Teaching by Full-time Faculty: Guidelines
FT
Faculty Adjunct Rate will be determined from the scale,
however it will not exceed their equivalent FT Hourly Rate.
FT
Faculty must teach a FT teaching load before they are eligible for an Adjunct
assignment.
FT
Faculty may be assigned no more than one Adjunct class,
however exceptions may be made under extenuating circumstances with the
approval of the VPAA.
Non-exempt
FT staff will be compensated according to FLSA guidelines and in accordance
with the published Adjunct Pay Scale.
Department
Chairs may not have Adjunct assignments, unless approved by the VPAA.
The
scale and these guidelines will be reviewed annually.
