DeKalb Technical College Recognizes Compassionate Volunteer

Teaching English to non-English speaking students is a huge task.  Teaching English to non-English speaking students who can neither read nor write in their own language is even a greater task, and one that DeKalb Technical College’s volunteer, Ray Vaughn, does three days per week.

L-R: Asfashe Gebremedhin from Ethiopia, Maryan Guled from Somalia, and Ray Vaughn.

Vaughn tutors either individuals or small groups that have been identified by classroom teachers as needing extra help at the Office of DeKalb Technical College’s Clarkston Day Program.  Vaughn, who taught English as a Second Language in Europe for many years, concentrates on students in the pre-literacy classes but is willing to assist students at any level.

Vaughn also works with several organizations that address concerns of refugees and asylum-seekers.  His own words convey his devotion to his work. “So many of these students were forced to leave their homes in order to find safety,” he shares.  “They  are often here not by choice.  It’s so lovely to see them every day and to walk with them on their journey toward becoming productive U. S. citizens.”

One of Vaughn’s goals is to attract other volunteers to the English as a Second Language program.  “The students will certainly benefit from more role models and enthusiastic teachers like Ray,” says Dr. Martha Coursey, Dean of Adult Literacy Services.  “Ray’s compassion and calm manner have won over the students and faculty alike.”
