Conyers Student Wins Second Place in Manufacturing Appreciation Week T-shirt Design Contest
William Richard Craven, a tenth grader from Conyers, Ga., had lunch with Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue today.
Craven, 16, won second place in the t-shirt category of the 2007 Manufacturing Appreciation Week (MAW) student design contest. He received a $300 scholarship check, presented by Gov. Perdue at the MAW awards luncheon held today at the Cobb Galleria. WXIA-TV’s Wes Sarginson was Master of Ceremonies.

Craven, who attends Heritage High School, wants to be a 3-D animator and artist after graduation. What’s the secret to his successful entry? “It was simple and got my point across,” he said.
"DeKalb Technical College is pleased to have student winners in the creative design competition from our service area. It is very important for young people to understand the impact that manufacturing has on the state of Georgia and its economy and most especially in the area in which they live," says DeKalb Technical College President Robin Hoffman. "Congratulations to the students and to their art teachers for their talents and interest in this project."

The awards luncheon is the highlight of MAW, celebrated this year April 9-13. Co-hosted by the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education and the Georgia Department of Economic Development, MAW brings attention to this significant component of Georgia’s economy. According to the governor’s proclamation declaring Manufacturing Appreciation Week, more than 10,000 manufacturing facilities are located in Georgia. They provide 450,622 jobs, contributing more than $100 billion to the state’s economy each year.
