Membership on the Board of Directors for the College is an honor and also carries with it a responsibility. Board members work in close cooperation with the President of the College to accomplish the college’s mission and goals. Directors are required to discharge their duties in good faith and with the degree of diligence, care and skill that an ordinary prudent person would use under similar circumstances in comparable positions.
Aaron Varner, a lifelong resident of Newton County, is also a graduate of DeKalb Technical College. A decorated veteran, he has served as the Chairman of the Newton County Commissioners since 2001. Varner has a long history of community involvement and is a graduate of the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government; the Academy of Leadership of the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia; the Certified Commissioners Advanced Program, and Leadership Newton County.
David Purcell has served as Board Chairman for the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce, DeKalb Partners in Education Foundation, and Senior Connections. A member of many community and national organizations, Purcell served as a loaned Georgia Power executive working as Economic Development Director for DeKalb County during the time that Stone Crest Mall became a reality. His primary responsibilities with Georgia Power include maintaining relationships and assisting with local issues surrounding education, especially pertaining to workforce development.
“DeKalb Technical College continues to grow and prosper because of the involvement of volunteers like Mr. Varner and Mr. Purcell,” says President Hoffman. “We look forward to a long, working relationship with both gentlemen.”
