DeKalb Technical College Hosts GBI Internet Investigations Training

Since early 2006 DeKalb Technical College’s Covington Campus has been hosting Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI) training in conjunction with the University of Tennessee’s Law Enforcement Innovation Center to Federal, State, and Local agencies concerning internet investigations.  Thus far this year there have been four classes and a number of others are scheduled and in planning.

“The training is being sponsored and held by the GBI which is the governing and responsible agency for the Georgia ICAC Task Force, “says Beverly Thomas, Criminal Justice Instructor.  “The task force members, including me, get access to this training in order to knowledgeably investigate child internet crimes through our local agencies.”

Each training session is primarily dedicated to internet child pornography investigations through the National Internet Crimes against Children (ICAC) Task Forces.  Each class has had between 20-30 participants which have included officers/investigators from such agencies as the Federal Bureaus of Investigations (FBI), Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the U.S. Military, Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI), Georgia Technology Authority, local agencies such as DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office, DeKalb County Police Department, Fulton County Districts Attorney’s Office, Newton County Sheriff’s Office, Conyers Police Department, Loganville Police Department, Walton County Sherriff’s Office, Athens-Clarke County Sheriff’s Office, Chatham County Sheriff’s Department, Clayton County Police Department, Forsyth County Sherriff’s Department, Hall County, Winder Police Department, Columbus Police Department, Eurhalee Police Department, Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, and many others from across the state.  Each training class is typically a week long and covers subjects involving extensive and sensitive materials.
