Former State Senator and Corporate Executive Join the DeKalb Technical College Foundation Board of Trustees
At the January 19, 2007 annual meeting of the DeKalb Technical College Foundation, Dr. Eugene P. Walker of DeKalb County and Mr. Terry Taschwer of Rockdale County joined the Board of Trustees. Dr. Walker, who had been a member of the Board in previous years, returned to the Board as the new Secretary of the Board. Mr. Taschwer was nominated and elected as a new Trustee of the Board and as a member of the Finance and Investment Committee.
As Trustees, Dr. Walker and Mr. Taschwer will join the Board in assisting DeKalb Technical College, a Unit of the Technical College System of Georgia, with the continued enhancement of high quality technical and adult education programs and services offered in DeKalb, Rockdale, Newton and Morgan counties. DeKalb Technical College and the Foundation are committed to meeting the economic and workforce development needs of the area through adult education; state-of-the-art technical education and training in associate degrees, diplomas and certificate programs; and noncredit seminars, workshops and courses providing specialized training.
Dr. Robin Hoffman, President of DeKalb Technical College, was pleased to welcome Dr. Walker and Mr. Taschwer. “We are ready to work together toward educational excellence by leveraging various experiences in the regional community,” said Dr. Hoffman. “The Board is enriched by our new members; Dr. Walker has a strong presence in DeKalb County, and Mr. Taschwer is key business leader in Rockdale County.”
Dr. Walker, a resident of Lithonia, was appointed by Governor Roy Barnes to the State Board of Pardon and Paroles where he served until December 2006. He was also appointed by Governor Zell Miller in 1995 as the Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice. In 1984, Dr. Walker was elected State Senator from the 43rd Senatorial District and served in that capacity for almost a decade. As former Vice President of Personnel and Community Relations of DeKalb Technical College, Dr. Walker already has a rich history with the College. He was also involved with the original establishment of the College’s Foundation. Dr. Walker’s community involvement includes participation in several civic, community, and professional groups including Literacy Action, Inc., United Cerebral Palsy, and the DeKalb Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Mr. Terry Taschwer, a resident of Conyers, is the Commercial Manager for Pratt Industries – USA, Inc. and a Certified Public Accountant. Mr. Taschwer has over 30 years of experience dealing with business and governmental agencies. His responsibility with Pratt Industries involves the purchasing of natural gas and negotiating contracts for electricity and telephone services for 28 facilities across the United States. Mr. Taschwer is actively involved in community and professional organizations including membership in the Rockdale County Hospital Board, the Rockdale Zoning Appeal Board, the Georgia Highway 20 Coalition, and the American Institute and Indiana Society of CPA’s.
The DeKalb Technical College Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization incorporated in 1987, promotes the cause of postsecondary technical and adult education, supports educational opportunities for the constituents of DeKalb Technical College, and assists in providing resources to support the College. The focus of the Board is providing resources to support the strategic initiatives of the College, creating scholarships, establishing endowments and other funds, assisting in financing capital improvements, and supporting the programs and services of the College.
