Adult Literacy Services

Adult Literacy Services has a comprehensive purpose of moving adults towards self-sufficiency and is offered at 23 various locations in DeKalb, Rockdale, Newton, and Morgan counties. It was designed for students 18 years old and over, but at ages 16 and 17 students may enroll with a withdrawal form from their last school attended or with written permission from their parents. Regardless of age, all Adult Literacy Service students must follow the Student Conduct Code of DeKalb Technical College. Adult Literacy classes are tuition free, they are available day and night, and they consist of four components: the Basic Literacy Program, the English Language Program, the Workplace Literacy Program, and the GED Program. The contact number is (404) 297-9522 ext. 2501.

Basic Literacy Program
Adult students whose scores from the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) determine that they have reading, writing, or match achievement at the eighth grade level or lower are enrolled in the Basic Literacy Program. An individualized study plan is developed for each Basic Literacy student, and goals are set ranging from learning how to read, advancing on their job, being able to help their children with their homework, or preparing to enter GED training. Basic Literacy classes are open entry; students can study and progress at their own pace; and small group instruction, individualized instruction, and computerized instruction are available.

English Language Program
English Language Program students comprise more than one-half of all Adult Literacy Services. Primarily designed for students who do not speak English as their first language, the Program currently enrolls students from 40 different countries, they speak 30 different languages, and they are engaged in six levels of instruction. Some are illiterate in their own language and others are professional persons such as medical doctors, lawyers, and teachers who simply need to learn the English language. Others are refugees who are federally funded and receive free transportation to classes.

Workplace Literacy Program
The Workforce Literacy Program teaches English Language, Basic Literacy, and Computer Literacy, and conducts classes at the worksites of various area employers. DeKalb Tech Workplace Literacy administrators visit potential worksites to assess the educational needs of workers targeted by their employers. The administrators then meet with company managers or supervisors to design a curriculum that meets the needs of the employer and the workers, and the scheduling of classes is set accordingly. Workplace Literacy classes help to reduce employer expenses associated with errors, accidents, and employee turnover.

The GED Program
The highest pursuit in Adult Literacy Services is the General Education Development (GED) Program. A variety of GED classes are offered to prepare students for the GED Exam including GED On-line preparation. Upon passing the GED Exam, a student is certified to possess the major and lasting outcomes of a traditional high school education. The GED Program serves as a bridge to education and employment. Moreover, its high standards of performance have led colleges and universities to accept passing the GED Exam as an entry requirement equivalent to a high school diploma. GED candidates are a richly diverse group. Some have recently dropped out of high school, and others are returning to school after a lack of success in the workplace. Some students take the GED Exam primarily to enter college or a university, but most do so in order to qualify for a new job or a promotion.
