Advisement

DeKalb Technical College offers a comprehensive advising process designed to start students on the right path toward completion of their program. The staff of professional Academic advisorsand trained program advisors/instructors work together to guide and support each student in making a successful transition to college, and ultimately, the workplace.

Academic Advisors assist new, transfer and returning students with first-quarter advisement. Advisement consists of evaluating test scores, discussing career plans, and developing course schedules.

Program Advisors are faculty assigned by department to help students select the appropriate technical courses that lead to program completion.

Co-Advisors are faculty within the General Studies department who assist students with the advisement of general studies courses including English, Reading and Math.

Students are best served when they meet with advisors every quarter, prior to registration. Students must bring the following documents to their advisement appointments:

1. Placement test scores
2. Program acceptance letter
3. Current schedule/Invoice
4. Most recent Grade Report
5. Transcript evaluation form

Duplicate copies of the Placement Test scores and the Program Acceptance Letter may be requested from the Office of Admissions. A copy of the Transcript Evaluation Form may be requested from the Office of the Registrar. The Current Schedule/Invoice and most recent Grade Report are available through Banner Web at https://banweb.dekalbtech.edu.

Graduation Advisement
Program Advisement requires close cooperation between students and their assigned program advisor. In order to insure program completion and graduation, students should take the following steps:

• Be familiar with the requirements for a given program of study.
• Schedule an appointment with the Program Advisor in the third or fourth week of each quarter to discuss progress in courses, any program changes, and next quarter registration activities.
• Consider their personal, academic, and career goals to assure goal achievement.
• Identify special situations which affect goal achievement such as limits on time, work schedule, background deficiencies, other commitments, etc.
• Maintain materials utilized in Program Advisement, such as the Catalog, Course Sequence Form, class schedule, Program Study guides, etc.

All students MUST INITIATE the graduation process. Please see current Catalog and/or the Graduation Application page.

A list of all advisors is available from the Current Students page.
