Tobacco-Free Environment
Tobacco-Free College
As the dangers of exposure to secondhand smoke have become more apparent and the realization that creating a tobacco free environment is important to the health and economy of the College community, the College has established a policy that creates a tobacco-free environment effective July 1, 2007. The College has an obligation to provide a healthy work and learning environment. DeKalb Technical College therefore establishes the following tobacco-free policy for all facilities.
Policy Statement:
Effective July 1, 2007, DeKalb Technical College is a tobacco-free college. Smoking or the use of any type of tobacco product is only permitted within vehicles parked or driven on designated college parking areas and roads. Persons using tobacco in private vehicles must dispose of the tobacco prior to exiting the vehicle and entering campus grounds. In all other areas, DeKalb Technical College is designated a tobacco-free campus both indoors and outdoors on all college properties. Violation of this policy may result in sanctions ranging from verbal reminders to dismissal from campus and from employment.
- This policy pertains to students, faculty, staff, administrators, visitors and the general public attending campus events
- This policy shall apply to all DeKalb Technical College facilities, owned or leased, regardless of location, now in existence or that come into existence after the enactment of this policy.
- Specifically, tobacco use is prohibited in all campus buildings, including classrooms, lecture halls, laboratories, offices, work areas, study areas, reception areas, meeting rooms, lobbies, hallways, stairwells, elevators, eating areas, lounges, and restrooms. Furthermore, smoking is prohibited in all partially enclosed areas such as covered walkways, breezeways and walkways between sections of buildings; areas immediately adjacent to building entrances, exterior stairway landings, patios, grassy and green space areas.
- Tobacco use is prohibited in all College vehicles including buses, vans, cars and trucks.
- Tobacco use is permitted in the following outdoor locations: The College’s parking lots inside personal vehicles.
- Organizers and attendees at public events, such as conferences, meetings, public lectures, social events and cultural events, using DeKalb Tech facilities will be required to abide by the colleges’ tobacco-free policy. Organizers of such events are responsible for communicating this policy to attendees and for enforcing this policy.
- Campus organizations are prohibited from accepting money or gifts from tobacco companies.
- Tobacco advertisements are prohibited on all college publications.
Enforcement:
1. It is the responsibility of all administrators, faculty, staff, and students to enforce this tobacco-free policy.
2. Department Heads, Chairs and Directors shall ensure that all personnel within their areas comply with all of the requirements.
3. Students who repeatedly violate the requirements of this policy may be disciplined through the Office of Student Affairs.
4. Staff who repeatedly violates the requirements of this policy may be disciplined through the appropriate college Vice President.
