Principles of Accreditation

To gain or maintain accreditation with the Commission on Colleges http://www.sacscoc.org/principles.asp, an institution must comply with the standards contained in the Principles of Accreditation: Foundations for Quality Enhancement http://www.sacscoc.org/pdf/PrinciplesOfAccreditation.PDF and with the policies and procedures of the Commission on Colleges. The Commission on Colleges applies the requirements of its Principles to all applicant, candidate, and member institutions, regardless of type of institution (public, private for-profit, private not-for-profit). 

The Comprehensive Standards set forth requirements in the following three areas: institutional mission, governance, and effectiveness; programs; and resources. The Comprehensive Standards represent good practices in higher education and establish a level of accomplishment expected of all member institutions. Institutions respond to each Comprehensive Standard either by confirming compliance or by explaining those situations that constitute noncompliance.
