How often should I meet with my program advisor?
You should meet with your advisor at least once a quarter, preferably before Banner web registration.
Who is required to take the COMPASS exit test?
Students who are registered for ENG 098 and RDG 098 cannot register for ENG 191 until they pass the exit test. Students who are registered for MAT 099 cannot register for MAT 191 until they pass the exit test. Exit testing in all three courses is scheduled for the 9th week of the quarter. Who overides a prerequisite, test scores, and/or seat counts?
All overrides for pre-requisites/test scores and/or seat counts must be approved by a Department Chair, Dean, or Assistant Dean.
What is the difference between an XXX XXX Occupational Elective and an XXX XXX ELECTIVE?
Occupational Elective XXX XXX means the “free” elective needs to be related to the program of study whereas an XXX XXX Elective is a “free” elective that does not have to be related to the program of study.
Do all students have to meet a writing, reading, and math admission requirement?
Yes. It is necessary for students to meet program admission requirements.
Do we accept SAT, ACT, and ASSET scores?
Admissions still accepts SAT, ACT, and ASSET scores.
Are all students required to take the COMPASS test?
No. If students have test scores that are less than 5 years old, they do not have to take the COMPASS Test. However, admissions does encourage it to help complete their file and to help place students in classes if their transcripts arrive at the final hour and students do not have time to be evaluated prior to registration.
If a student is completing a second diploma, how many hours must they complete in the new program?
A student must complete at least 30 additional credit hours toward the new program.
Is it permissible for a student to initially enroll in a diploma program and then change to a degree?
Yes.
What is meant by a second chance HOPE?
The second chance HOPE refers to those who don’t qualify for HOPE coming out of high school because of their grades, but they can attempt to qualify after they have attempted 45 credit hours.
Is there a cut off on the number of years a general education class is acceptable at DeKalb Technical College?
No. ENGLISH, MATH, SPEECH, and PSYCHOLOGY (Areas 1, 2, 3) are always accepted if they are from an accredited college with the exception of the Health and Human Services Department which is 10 years.
Is there a cut off on the number of years for other classes?
In other areas, i.e. Area IV (core courses), they will not be accepted if they are over 10 years old.
