Definition of Terms Relating to Academic Advisement
Academic Advisor
Corey Parker (Clarkston) and Angela Cummings (Covintgon) are the full-time academic advisors. They advise all first-quarter students after they have completed the COMPASS test.
Program Advisors
All full-time faculty who teach in a specific department are considered program advisors. For example, Queen Young is the program advisor for students majoring in Business Office Specialist. Program advisors may assist students in selecting their classes for both program specific and their math, language, or reading courses.
Co-Advisors
All full-time faculty who teach in the Developmental/General Education (Learning Support) department are co-advisors. They are available to aid students in selecting their reading, language, or math classes.
Provisional Admission
Assigned to students who do not meet Regular Admission requirements but who commit to do so prior to graduation. Provisional Admission students are limited to 25 program credit hours at which time they must have reached regular admissions status or they will be allowed to take only developmental courses. Students whose reading, language, and math achievement levels do not meet Regular Admission requirements must enroll in Developmental Studies or appropriate prerequisite courses. Some programs have course exceptions to these prerequisites based upon state standards.
Regular Admission
Assigned to students who meet the requirements of a credit program which requires official transcripts from previous high schools and colleges and satisfactory placement scores on the SAT, ACT, CPE, COMPASS, or the ASSET Placement Test.
See the DeKalb Technical College (2005- 2006) General Catalog for explanation on Developmental Studies Admission and Special Admission
