Dual Enrollment Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  Who can participate in this program?
A:  Any high school student age 16 or older who meets the Dual Enrollment qualifications.

Q:  What are the qualifications for enrollment?
A:  Students must pass the ASSET or COMPASS placement test, submit completed paperwork, and meet the guidelines to qualify for financial aid.

Q:  What programs of study can I earn dual credit for?
A:  Programs vary depending on each high school.  DeKalb Technical College currently offers Car Audio Installation, Certified Customer Service Specialist, Certified Manufacturing Specialist, Certified Construction Worker, Criminal Justice Fundamentals, Homeland Security, and Certified Nursing Assistant.

Q:  Can I earn college credits for courses such as Math and English?
A:  No.  The Dual Enrollment program offers vocational courses that do not compete with current high school course offerings.  Courses that are offered under Dual Enrollment program must not include core academic courses.

Q:  Will the Dual Enrollment credits that I earn transfer to all colleges in Georgia?
A:  Credits earned can be transferred to some technical colleges in the state of Georgia and some colleges and universities.  Students must contact the college or university that they wish to attend and request transfer information concerning admission. 

Q:  What is the cost involved for participation in the program?
A:  There is a one-time $20.00 Application Fee. Students must meet the eligibility requirements for the HOPE Grant or pay tuition and mandatory fees. The HOPE Grant covers most fees, including books.  However, some programs require additional costs: insurance, uniforms, and materials.      

Q:  Will participation in this program affect my HOPE Scholarship eligibility?
A:  Effective Fall 2004, there is a cap on the hours students can receive from HOPE funding. Students will be able to use the HOPE Grant a total of 63 semester or 95 quarter hours for certificate and diploma programs. The HOPE Grant and Scholarship funds are combined with an overall HOPE credit hour cap of 127 semester hours or 190 quarter hours.
